Who can attend the Academy?


Those aged 16 to 19 years old (on August 31st of each year) and eligible to study at Barnet and Southgate College are able to apply. American football experience is not necessary, and the NFL Academy encourages applicants from a variety of sporting backgrounds. The NFL Academy is seeking student-athletes interested in developing their educational, athletic and character potential using American Football.




When can I apply?


Applications are now being received and are being reviewed by the Academy team. Based on the review by our coaches, educators and staff, the Academy will be contacting applicants directly about future interviews and next steps.




I would like to volunteer as a coach or event helper. Where can I sign up?

What is the NFL?


The NFL is the number one professional sports league in the United States, eclipsing all other sports in terms of popularity and TV viewing figures. The league's 32 teams compete to win the Super Bowl, the finale of the season, which attracts around 160 million viewers in the US alone.




Are there any British players in the NFL?


There are a growing number of British players on NFL rosters. They include Efe Obada, a defensive end with the Carolina Panthers; defensive lineman Jack Crawford of the Tennessee Titans; offensive linemen Jermaine Eluemunor at the New England Patriots; tight end Christian Scotland-Williamson at the Pittsburgh Steelers and former England rugby international Christian Wade, who signed as a running back with the Buffalo Bills. London-born running back Jay Ajayi won Super Bowl with the Philadelphia Eagles after the 2017 season. Osi Umenyiora, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the New York Giants and award-winning pundit on the BBC's NFL coverage, was also born in north London.




Can you see the NFL on UK television?


Sky Sports shows in excess of 100 live NFL games every season, including all playoff games and Super Bowl. BBC TV airs a weekly highlight show, on Saturday nights after Match of the Day. Channel 5 also broadcast Monday Night Football live and shows NFL Endzone on Sunday mornings.




When does the NFL season run?


The NFL season kicks off in early September (with preseason games played during August). The playoffs run throughout January, with Super Bowl played on the first Sunday of February.




What type of athletic film is best?


American Football game film is preferred, but not required. Any athletic tape that shows us your speed, athleticism, power / explosiveness and agility is useful for helping us learn about your abilities. If you need to capture new footage please make sure you are compliant with government guidelines on social distancing. American Football is open to all levels of abilities and every different body type.




Does the NFL Academy offer scholarships?


The NFL Academy is open to all applicants, regardless of background or economic situation. If you’re interested in applying, please don’t let your financial situation prevent you from doing so. We will discuss individual situations privately and respectfully with each family when necessary.




I'm from outside London or outside the UK. Can I attend the NFL Academy?


Yes! We currently have many students from outside London that attend our Academy, as well as multiple international students. We can discuss our home stay program with interested families individually.




When does the school year start?


The NFL Academy follows the academic calendar of our educational partner, Barnet and Southgate College. Current plans coincide with the start of the 2021/22 academic year during the week commencing September 6th.




I'm not old enough to apply to the NFL Academy. How can I practice and play American Football?


Please visit the NFL Flag website to sign up and receive information about flag football in your local area. Alternatively, take a look at Nike's 11-Online for drills and insights directly from the best in the game. Although you may be too young to apply, still submit your film, so our Coaching Staff can see your talent. In the meantime you can continue to keep practicing your skills through the Nike 11-Online website.




What information do I need to apply?


The full list of suggested information can be found in the link the online registration here. Generally speaking, the more athletic film, the better. But don’t let one piece of information or a lack of formal football film stop you from applying! We’ll be promoting different ways to showcase your talent in the coming weeks. Be creative to (safely) show us what you’ve got and why you’re a good fit for our team. When capturing film please make sure you are compliant with government guidelines on social distancing.




When is the application deadline?


Sunday March 28th.




What are the age limits?


You have to be between 16-19 years old on August 31st 2021.




Do I need to have any American Football experience?


No. Some of our current students have backgrounds in rugby, athletics and many other sports.




Can I apply if I live outside London?


Yes. Many current students are from outside London. Accommodation options are available.




Can I apply if I live outside the UK?


Yes. A few current students are from Europe. Accommodation options are available.




Can I apply if I live outside of Europe?


Yes. Accommodation options are available.




Can I DM you the videos?


You need to upload your videos or provide a link to your video on your submission form.




Will there be a physical trial?


Given the current situation due to COVID-19, there are no current plans to hold a physical trial, however this situation is being monitored closely.





Do I need good grades to get into the Academy?


Your education is the most important thing at the Academy. All student-athletes have their grades reviewed to ensure they can be placed on the correct course.
