Barney initially played rugby before discovering American football through a school friend who introduced him to the Solent Seahawks. After just one season, he earned a spot on the GB Lions U17 national team in late 2023 and joined the NFL Academy in early 2024 after impressing coaches at the March 2024 combine in Loughborough. Outside of football, he enjoys playing guitar, cycling, and rugby. His favourite NFL team are the San Francisco 49ers.
